Nerolidol, also known as peruviol, is a sesquiterpene and that smells similar to chopped wood or fresh bark with a hint of flowers. There are two isomers present in nature, cis and trans, with no significant differences discovered between the two. The terpene has been shown to be a toxin against harmful protozoa like malaria and leishmaniasis as well as a powerful anti-neuroinflammation. Furthermore, nerolidol is effective in delivering drugs through the skin.
Trans-nerolidol is a secondary terpene found in many strong aromatics like jasmine, tea tree, and lemongrass. As such behind the fresh wood odor, it delivers a subdued and nuanced floral aroma with notes of fruity citrus, apples, and rose.
This terpene is believed to produce sedating effects, and is being investigated for the following medical benefits:
Nerolidol’s Effects and Benefits
- Influences body to create natural antioxidants
- Tissue repair
- Improves trans-dermal drug penetration

A 2016 study on Parkinson's Disease in rats concluded that:
"Our findings are the first to show that the neuropreotective effect of nerolidol is mediated through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which strongly support its therapeutic potential for the treatment of PD (Parkinson's Diesease)"
A 2017 study showed that both nerolidol and limonene are both effective at crossing the epidermis membrane to help carry trans-dermal drugs into the system.
A 2018 study done in India concluded that Nerolidol, along with other essential oils, had the ability for anti-virulence and inhibit bio-film production in MRSA.
Another study done in 2018 demonstrated that rats who contracted endometriosis had less legions and more bodily antioxidants produced than the control.
